AQ Q&A: Elizabeth Economy on China's Global Rise
Elizabeth Economy, AQ author and C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director for Asia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, speaks with Americas Quarterly about how "traditionally, China's foreign policy has trailed its economic policy" and how China's military and diplomatic policy will increasingly step into the fore.
Economy notes that there is a "significant divide between China's rhetoric and the reality of its behavior," citing instances such as the current impracticality for the yuan to become the world's reserve currency as well as China's inaction toward solving the European debt crisis. Economy also discusses how "we have no idea" at this time what a Xi Jinping presidency will hold for China's future.
