AQ Speaks with Scholars on Chinese Mining Projects in Peru

Following the article by Barbara Kotschwar, Theodore Moran and Julia Muir of the Peterson Institute for International Economics—"Do Chinese Mining Companies Exploit More?" from the Fall 2011 issue—AQ asked two leading scholars about this subject while on a recent trip to Lima.

First, Miguel Santillana, lead researcher of the Instituto del Perú at the Universidad de San Martín de Porres, talks about the significance mining has on the Peruvian economy, the evolution of that industry in terms of labor and environmental rights, and whether there are any risks involved with Chinese investment in that sector.

Second, Cynthia Sanborn, director of the Universidad del Pacífico’s Research Center, talks about the differences between Chinese and North American mining investment in Peru.
