Eighty-nine percent of young people in Latin America say they hope to one day start a business – the highest rate in the world. But too often, barriers to success – from gender discrimination to a lack of willing investors – prevent the region’s aspiring entrepreneurs from realizing their full potential.

On Feb. 16, four young Latin American founders who have broken through those barriers will join Americas Quarterly in Miami for a public discussion on what it took for them to succeed – and what the region can do to take advantage of its vast entrepreneurial talent.

The speakers include two of AQ’s “Top 5 Young Latin American Entrepreneurs”: Andrés Moreno, the Venezuelan founder and CEO of Open English, a leading web-based language learning service; and Jimena Flórez, the Colombian founder of Chaak Healthy Snacks, a line of organically-sourced treats that help young people eat right. Silvina Moschini, an Argentine serial entrepreneur who has helped women across the region start successful businesses, and Felipe Sommer, the Argentine co-founder and COO of interactive education platform Nearpod, will also share their experiences.

These four entrepreneurs will be joined on stage by the Miami program director of the Knight Foundation, Matt Haggman, who launched the organization’s initiative for building community through entrepreneurship in South Florida; and Susan Segal, president and CEO of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, who over the course of 30 years working in Latin America has supported and mentored the region’s young entrepreneurs. AQ’s editor-in-chief Brian Winter will moderate the discussion.

This public event, held in conjunction with Endeavor Miami and the Idea Center at Miami Dade College, will mark the official launch of AQ’s latest issue, “Young Entrepreneurs,” an extended look at how Latin American entrepreneurship can help propel the region’s economies.

Those wishing to attend can register online here. If you can’t join us, please tune in on Feb. 16 at 6pm ET for a live webcast of the event.
